Our Origin
Messages From The Mississippi programming grew from the Education and Kits programming at Public Lab. Messages From The Mississippi was developed in direct response to rapid changes in the coastal environment that have become apparent in the first decades of the 21st century. The goal of the program is to provide resources and opportunities for young people to engage in self-directed, place-based scientific research. Each program takes a slightly different approach, but the goal remains the same; empower young people to recognize and investigate environmental issues in the areas where they live, and build their capacity to engage their communities in developing collective, just solutions.
Our Work
Louisiana’s rich and dynamic environment encompasses a vast area of land, water, and culture that serve as the lifeblood of this great state. Making wise decisions about using these resources is therefore necessary for us to maintain both a healthy environment and a vibrant economy. At Messages From The Mississippi our goal is to provide resources and opportunities for young people to engage in meaningful environmental education that foster environmental literacy and stewardship. We design these place-based science experiences to empower young people to recognize and investigate environmental issues in the areas where they live, and build their capacity to engage their communities in developing collective, just solutions. To date, Messages From The Mississippi has worked directly with educators from five schools across three parishes, impacting over 300 K12 students.
